Victoria Shen (A.K.A. Evicshen) is a sound artist, experimental music performer, and instrument-maker based in San Francisco. Shen's practice is concerned with the materiality of sound and its relationship to the human body through a lens of disruption and experimentation. She creates and manipulates custom-built sculptures and extensions specific to her body to challenge conventional methods of sound production and erode the boundaries between performer, tool, and audience.

Shen will perform in dialogue with a new exhibition by Houston-based artist Mark Flood, “Buddy Can You Spare a Meme” inside Co-Lab's Culvert Gallery. Together, Flood and Shen operate on the same adversarial frequency. Both artists weaponize humor and chaos against established systems—he through visual mockery, she through sonic assault. Where Flood asks you to laugh at the art world's absurdities, Shen makes you feel the discomfort of sound pushed past its breaking point. Neither artist offers you comfort or easy answers. They offer you a mirror, amplified and distorted, reflecting back the ridiculous machinery of contemporary culture at volumes impossible to ignore.

Shen uses what she calls "chaotic sound" to oppose signal and information, eluding traditionally embedded meaning. Eschewing conventions in harmony and rhythm in favor of extreme textures and gestural tones, her work resists passive consumption. Instead, the body as both subject and instrument, using movement and tactility to provoke visceral, often confrontational encounters with sound. Her performances are deliberately physical, unpredictable, and ephemeral—rejecting polish in favor of raw immediacy.

In her live performances, she proposes an exploration between meaning and non-meaning through the physical activation of noise tropes.  Her music features analog modular synthesizers, vinyl/resin records, and self-built electronics. For recent performances, she pioneered the use of Needle Nails, acrylic nails with embedded turntable styluses, which allow her to play up to five tracks of a record at once. Needle Nails, Levitating speaker, and her Noise Combs are some of the objects created by her as part of an extensive repertoire of innovations in the design of sound augmentation. These sculptural elements invite the viewer to unpack one’s relationship with the material possibilities for creating sound. The appendage-like instruments and objects she makes, exemplify Shen’s ability to embody through sound her interest in the tension created by opposition: control and chaos, the unique and the mass produced, the practical and the absurd.

Shen has performed solo across North America, Japan, China, Mexico, Australia/NZ, the UK, and Europe, as a member of the turntable trio with Mariam Rezaei and Maria Chavez, as a member of hip hop group 1 Above Minus Underground. Shen has also collaborated with Mix Master Mike of the Beastie Boys and groups such as the Kronos Quartet, Matmos, clipping, Acid Mothers Temple, and Mike Watt and the Missing Men. Some notable venues in which she has performed include Boston City Hall, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, ISSUE Project Room NY, DOMMUNE Tokyo, Petreon Sculpture Park Cyprus, MUNCH Museum Oslo, Art Gallery of NSW Sydney, and Museo d'Arte Orientale Turin. Shen has also been an artist in residence at Elektronmusikstudion EMS Stockholm SE, WORM Rotterdam NL, Kurimanzutto New York US, The Royal Danish Academy Copenhagen DK, and AUDIUM San Francisco US, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts Omaha US, and Headlands Center for the Arts US, and Audio Foundation Auckland NZ.

Shen currently works at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics Stanford and School of Visual Arts NY. Shen is also a serving member of the Board of Directors for The Lab in San Francisco.

In this lecture, Victoria Shen (A.K.A. Evicshen) will share her experience as a sound artist, experimental music performer, and instrument-maker. Shen's sound practice is concerned with the spatiality/physicality of sound and its relationship to the human body. Her personal identity, her body, is the space her work utilizes to restructure sonic meaning. In her live performances, she proposes an exploration between meaning and non-meaning through the physical activation of noise tropes–the body as both subject and instrument.

“My practice treats sound as a material force; something that pushes, scrapes, resists, and accumulates, rather than an abstract signal. Raised by a Cambodian refugee mother whose life was shaped by displacement and improvisation, I approach making through resourcefulness and embodied problem-solving. Scarcity, friction, and adaptation are not only biographical conditions but compositional principles.

Originally trained in visual art and art history, I moved toward electroacoustic music and expanded turntablism while teaching myself circuit design and electronics. I build my own instruments, often attaching them directly to my body or designing them as prosthetic extensions, so that performance becomes a negotiation between flesh, gesture, and machine. My work explores tensions between control and chaos, virtuosity and collapse, intimacy and amplification. By foregrounding physical labor and instability, I challenge conventions of live musical consumption and destabilize assumptions about what constitutes an instrument.

My recent and ongoing development focuses on deepening the integration of body and technology, particularly through analog systems. I am interested in corporeal circuitry: magnetic fields interacting with skin, embedded electronics, ferric materials, and wearable or tattooed audio media that collapse distinctions between organism and device. Moving forward, I aim to expand this research into more immersive, site-responsive works and collaborative formats, creating systems where the body becomes both archive and transmitter; simultaneously vulnerable, conductive, and generative.”

Mark Flood returns to Co-Lab Projects after 13 years with an exhibition opening Saturday, March 21, 2026. In this latest work, Flood dives headfirst into the shallow end of memes. He again turns his caustic, mocking eye to his favorite subject matter–the contemporary art world. Flood takes one of the most prevalent forms of humor in the digital era and perverts it into culture warfare body horror aimed squarely at the art world itself. Memes, typically viewed on a screen where no one can judge you for your private amusement, will now be blazoned onto large canvases and displayed graffiti-style on the gallery walls. This body of work, designed to offend, dares you to laugh in public.

Under his many monikers, Flood has always been many things at once: painter, writer, musician, punk, satirist, champion and critic of the art world he inhabits. His work strips away pretension and mocks self-importance, using dark humor to defang the systems that try to mold us. He refuses easy political positions or earnest messaging. Instead, he invites us to laugh at ourselves—art-worlders and civilians alike—exposing the absurdities of contemporary culture through distortion and subversion. If you can laugh about the darkest aspects of life, this work suggests, you can neuter them.

On Saturday, April 18, 2026, in collaboration with Fusebox Festival, Co-Lab will present a performance inside the Flood installation by San Francisco-based sound artist Victoria Shen (a.k.a. Evicshen). Shen makes noise—the chaotic, physical, body-rattling kind that you feel in your stomach. Mark Flood is an interdisciplinary artist known for his irreverent, punk-inspired critiques of the art world, mass media, and consumer culture based in Houston, TX.

Mark Flood’s work has been widely exhibited in solo and group shows across the United States and internationally. His solo exhibitions include Lace Paintings at Marty Walker Gallery in Dallas (2006), American Fine Art in New York (2004), and Peres Projects in Berlin (2015). He has also shown at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (2016) and Karma in New York (2020). Group exhibitions have included Pretty Ugly, co-hosted by Gavin Brown’s Enterprise and Maccarone in New York, as well as numerous other shows throughout his career.

Flood’s work is held in the permanent collections of prestigious institutions, including the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and The Menil Collection. His work is also part of the Rubell Family Collection in Miami and international collections such as the Taguchi Art Collection in Tokyo.

Ultrasound, a new performance by Justo Cisneros with dancers Anna Bauer and Jairus Carr and multi-instrumentalist Shea McGilvray, exploring psychic freedom as an act of reclaiming the imprisoned spirit. Within Co-Lab’s culvert, the site transforms into a passage of intimacy, distortion, and gestation, as bodies respond to internal and structural tensions of resistance by collapsing time into a single undivided state. Within the realm of the unseen, movement and sound give form to the invisible by exploring what emerges when one body crosses the threshold as another remains held inside it. Ultrasound operates within a world of dream logic, where time hangs in suspension, carrying traces of what has yet to appear and what may never be.

Justo Cisneros is an artist based in San Antonio Texas, working in sculpture, performance and music. His practice centers on myth-making and the creation of alternate realities, with a focus on site-responsive and experimental work. His projects include exhibitions and collaborations with Artpace, Contemporary at Blue Star, Co-Lab Projects, MASS Gallery, guadalajara90210, and Wild Ruins, Wild Orientations.

Anna Bauer is a choreographer and dancer based in Austin, Texas. She holds a BFA in Dance from Sam Houston State University and currently performs with KDH Dance Company and Allysen Hooks Projects. Her work has been presented at festivals and events across Texas and nationally, including Austin Dance Festival, Barnstorm Dance Fest, White Wave SoloDuo Dance Festival, Midwest RADFest and St. Louis Contemporary Dance Festival. Bauer has participated in residencies with Keshet Makers Space Experience, WhirlWind Dance Company, Homeport Art House, Bellingham Repertory Dance, and Agora Artists. In 2025, she and Jairus Carr produced their first full production, Everything We’ve Done So Far, and co-created the evening-length, site-specific work Love you, moon, produced by BLiPSWiTCH.

Jairus Carr is a dancer, choreographer, and artist based in Austin, Texas since 2007. He has worked with Austin area artists and companies including Early Era Collective, Jennifer Sherburn, and KDH Dance Company. In collaboration with his partner, Anna Bauer, Carr has presented work at festivals and residencies nationwide, including Austin Dance Festival, Barnstorm Dance Festival, RAD Fest, Keshet Makers Space and Homeport Art House.

Shea McGilvray (Space Available) is a San Antonio–based multi-instrumentalist. Active as a live project since 2021, Space Available blends sacred music with dystopian atmospheres through improvisational soundscapes incorporating saxophone, guitar, synthesizers, vocals and electronic processing.
